The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing by Al Ries and jack Trout condenses pretty much my entire university education in marketing into a quick, easy to read, 143 page book.

If your job involves anything to do with business or entrepreneurship then you should definitely give this book a read. It’ll give you a very strong foundation and understanding of marketing.

The book is broken up into 22 chapters, one for each law and each chapter is only about 4 to 5 pages long.

The laws cover topics such as first mover advantage, customer perception, product categories, competition and lots more.

The book gets to the point very quickly in each chapter. It explains the law and then provides examples of real-life companies who either followed the law and were rewarded with success or violated the law at great cost.

The book was originally published in 1993 which might turn some people off. I believe there is an updated version but from what I hear it’s not as good so you’re better off reading the original.

One of the biggest strengths of this book though is that it doesn’t matter how much time has passed since it’s publication, the laws are timeless and can still apply even with today’s technology.

There’s not much else to say about this book, it’s a very fast, easy to digest collection of some excellent bits of marketing wisdom.

If you’re not familiar with marketing at all then this is an excellent place to start.

If you’re any sort of manager or entrepreneur then you’ll also find this book incredibly valuable even if you don’t directly do that much marketing yourself. It’s still very valuable to have an understanding of how everything works.

Even if you have a ton of marketing experience this is still the kind of book that you’ll want to read again every so often just to keep things fresh in your mind.

You might think that a lot of these laws fall under the category of common sense and while that’s true the last chapter offers a warning about the challenges and opposition that you’ll face when you try to implement these laws either at the company where you work or in your own business.

As someone with a background in marketing I highly recommend you pick up The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing and give it a read every now and again.

It’ll definitely help you avoid making a lot of marketing related mistakes.
